Make the most of your Winter Wedding!

Make the most of your Winter Wedding

Winter weddings can offer the lucky couple such scope for creativity and also the opportunity to save a few hard-earned pounds. Here at EJCatering, we have assembled some ideas to help you navigate the sometimes difficult path to make your wedding a winter wonderland and not a winter meltdown.

What to look for in a caterer?

Lets face it, when you are looking for a caterer for your special day – it really is all about the food! Start with the website, give it a good going through and look at what they have produced for other people. The last thing you want is bland, ‘what you expect’ dishes. You want to see food that excites you and created by people with a real enthusiasm for what they produce.

Our top priorities would be:

  • Does the food excite you?
  • Does it spoil you?
  • Is it indulgent
  • Creativity
  • Attention to detail
  • Does it use fresh, local ingredients (if it doesn’t specify, then you can probably assume that it comes from a jar)

Above all, look for a bespoke service and make sure you are looked after!

Why a winter wedding can be amazing!

In the UK (especially this year), you may have been lucky enough to grab hold of two weeks of supposed summer, but for the rest of it (and us) it has been terrible. Leave behind the dross and the mundane and re-invent your own snow-fairy wonderland.

Treowen House
Treowen House

Think crisp winter day, snow white fairy tail, castles, towers, roaring fires, fur-lined wellies, candles over dinner and the few additional piece de resistances that make it all worth while. This could include  Pashminas as wedding favours for the girls (on the backs of chairs).

You really do have scope to bring-to-life medieval meets contemporary in your very own Winter wonderland all backed up by good British grastro/bistro fayre that will truly make your day magical. You can check out some of our wedding menus here.

Plus, prices for lots of things can be much cheaper during the winter months.

Ok, i’m with you, but where can we do that?

Here is our roundup for the best venues in South Wales that can really make your winter wedding go with a festive bang.

Pencoed house / The Barn@brynic – beautiful huge fire places in old Welsh barns with brick walls, wooden beamed roofs which set the mood for a really special day.

Rose dew farm boasts an amazing fire place, barn and guests cottages with underfloor heating.

Treowen house – huge fire place plus you get the run of the whole house and as much wood as you can burn. And, to top it off, the house cosily sleeps 38 people allowing the magic to last til dawn for you and your guests.

Do we need a theme?

Well, not everyone wants to set a too strict theme for their wedding. We have mentioned Snow White but equally think rustic, think familial, think….. you genuinely have a blank canvas to do whatever you want. You really can break away from the obvious and traditional wedding day and bring in exciting and creative elements that will make your day last for years to come in the memories of your guests!

Some examples of themes we’ve noticed include: 1920’s hollywood / movies,  winter wonderland, James Bond / Cocktail dresses & black tie.

Positives / negatives

This is purely a personal matter, but as we have mentioned earlier, there is no guarantee for the weather in Summer, so you have to double prepare. For winter, you straight away know what to expect, and yes, it may be a touch chillier, but how nice will that roaring log fire feel when you get inside!

Cost is also the other issue, with venues offering cheaper rates during the off-season months, it means you can make savings of thousands of pounds.

Don’t forget!

There are some things that you need to ensure you have when planning a winter-wedding, and if the event is outisde, then the number one priority is a marquee.

In addition to the marquee, we would recommend these optional extras:

  • Let your guests know if suitable footwear required
  • Umbrellas
  • Outdoor heating (think infra-red heat lamps, chimineas)
  • Alternative drink menu with lots of hot drinks (hot spiced apple cider, mulled wine and teas)
  • Slippers (for guests)
  • Linen supplies
  • All-weather mats / entrance
  • Transportation (make it super -easy for your guests!)
  • Table decorations
  • Colours (deep reds, purples and silver)
  • Cutlery
  • Crockery
  • Staff

At ej catering we run through your day and take an itinerary, with 13 years experience we can answer most questions and guide you through in order to make your day extra special.
